 Restore network connectivity to the designated backup domain controller (BDC) in the

domain

 Promote the designated BDC to the PDC

 Synchronize all Windows NT 4.0 domain controllers

 Test Windows NT 4.0 server operations and domain validation

 Document the reasons for the unsuccessful domain upgrade and communicate them to the

project team

 Restart the planning process for the domain upgrade

 Estimated time before recovery must take place

 Team review and sign-off

Performing Pre-Upgrade Tasks and Procedures Phase

Do initial tasks:

 Introduce a Windows Server 2003-based member server

 Review the Windows Server 2003 interim functional level documentation

 Relocate the LMRepl file replication service

Help protect domain data:

 Back up the PDC and at least one BDC

 Synchronize a BDC with the PDC, then remove the BDC from the network

 Fully back up any services running on domain controllers

Ensure the following before enabling the Windows NT 4.0 environment change freeze:

 All updates to the Windows NT 4.0 domain are complete and have fully replicated

 The Windows NT 4.0 domain administrator global group is configured properly

 A BDC has been synchronized and taken offline for recovery purposes

 Execute user and Windows NT 4.0 domain test plans

Upgrading Domains from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows Server 2003 Phase

Initial tasks:

 Configure DNS on the PDC

 Upgrade the Windows NT 4.0 PDC
