The forest functional level provides for backward compatibility with Windows 2000 domain

controllers. If no Windows 2000 servers will provide domain controller services such as

authentication, the Windows Server 2003 interim option can be selected. Keep in mind that there

is no going back after this option is selected. Compatibility with Windows NT 4.0 domain

controllers is available in both modes. There are four domain functional levels in Windows Server

2003:

• Windows 2000 Mixed. Supports Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003.

• Windows 2000 Native. Supports Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003.

• Windows Server 2003 Interim. Supports Windows NT 4.0, Windows Server 2003.

• Windows Server 2003. Supports Windows Server 2003.

By choosing the default option of Windows Server 2003 Interim, Windows Server 2003 will allow

for backward compatibility Windows NT 4.0 domain controllers. When in doubt, choose this

option. A change to support only Windows Server 2003 can be made at any time through a dialog

box in Active Directory Users and Computers. After making this important choice the installer is

presented with a dialog box to choose the location to store the Active Directory database as is

shown in the following figure.
